Shuffleboard has been around since the 1500's, it began as a gentleman's game, played with a large British coin. It changed names several times as it evolved, and it became a favorite past-time of the old country, as tables could be found in most opulent homes. It evolved over the centuries into a game enjoyed by one, and all. British soldiers and the Colonists alike enjoyed a rousing game of shuffleboard during their free time. It became a very competitive sport with tournaments being held all over the country. People were very serious about the game, as was demonstrated by an actual court case in 1848 involving a defendant who kept a gaming table in his pub; the argument was over the game being a game of skill, or luck. The judge in this matter decided it was definitely a game of skill.
As the centuries passed the tables became more refined, and accessible to all walks of life. Tournaments were well publicized, and held all over the United States, eventually a hall of fame was formed for shuffleboard players of great fame. In the 1950fs shuffleboard had its heyday with shuffleboard tournaments being held nationwide, but because the game was not uniformly organized, and it failed to gain sponsors, it fell off in the 1960fs, and 70fs; however the game did not die out completely.
Shuffleboard continues to be an enjoyable game for all members of the family, and shuffleboard tables are great fun to have at poolside parties. Family members can enjoy a rousing game of outdoor shuffleboard in the evenings, and it helps to stir up a little competitive spirit among all. Shuffleboard can also encourage closeness among family members, as children, and parents alike are able to compete in the game. Outdoor tables are made of galvanized steel, and they will hold up for many years allowing the family to enjoy their outdoor time with one another. So get the family off the computers, and away from the television, thus encouraging athletic activity instead of couch potatoes.
